Seminars

Between March and April a program of seminars on the EU and related European issues was delivered, these seminars used the proposed topics as contained in the original SAGE project plan and were as follows:

Introduction to the European Union – current developments and future trends

The “Convention on the Future of Europe”: towards a European Constitution

Citizens and democratic participation

Challenges and opportunities of the enlargement process

Rethinking the role of older citizens – promoting active ageing policies in the EU

Environmental issues and sustainable development

The EU as an area of freedom, security and justice for all

Creating a competitive social economy

Average attendance was between 35 and 40 per seminar and older citizens were a significant proportion of the audience. At each seminar the SAGE project was explained and attention was drawn to financial support received from the EU. The audience was also told about the proposed programme of ICT training for older citizens that was delivered in August and September 2004, many names of those interested in participating were collected and it was these people that went on to benefit from the ICT training.
